OK, this T-shirt idea has been floating around in my brain for quite some time now, even before OPORCO was even a thing.
I first thought of it when my son was playing futsal. Their coach had to step away for a few games because of work, so I was asked to step in and simply make the substitutions.
Well… under my management they suddenly started winning.
But enough about how great I am.
Back then I thought about making a shirt featuring Jorge Jesus with the words “What Would Jesus Do?” I figured it probably wouldn’t fly, though, and I’d end up spending more time explaining the joke than selling T-shirts—especially here in Port Macquarie.
So the idea stayed in the back of my mind.
Then OPORCO came along, but Mr Jesus was off in Saudi Arabia coaching Cristiano Ronaldo. It just didn’t feel right. I told myself that whenever Jorge returned to Portugal, I’d finally make it. He didn’t even have to go back to Benfica—I would’ve settled for Gil Vicente.
Well… now it’s official.
He’s the new manager of the Seleção.
The artwork is inspired by the iconic Obama HOPE posters because, let’s be honest, hope is exactly what we need right now. It’s certainly what I’m feeling.
Jorge has returned from wandering in the desert and is ready to whip the Seleção into shape in the only way he knows how.
I haven’t felt this kind of divine footballing hope since Luiz Felipe Scolari and his Nossa Senhora de Caravaggio back in 2004.
What would Jesus do? is a question people have asked themselves for years when they’re looking for guidance.
Well, Jorge will have an answer.
Or he’ll let you know exactly where you went wrong.
