Description
We’re Portuguese. We don’t really go to the beach to surf.
We go to lie in the sun, spend three hours under an umbrella, argue about which beach is better than the one we’re already at, and eat at least two bolas de Berlim before lunch.
Of course, after that you have to wait two hours before swimming… otherwise your digestion will stop. (I still have no idea what that actually means.)
Or maybe that’s just my family.
Growing up, my relatives always reassured me that Portugal’s beaches were perfectly safe because…
“There are no sharks.”
Now… I have absolutely no idea if that’s true.
They may well have just wanted me to stop asking questions.
Either way, sharks were never the reason I stayed out of the water.
The Algarve has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world…
…but the Atlantic is bloody freezing.
At least compared to Bondi. And my morning shower.
That never stopped me trying to convince the local Portuguese girls I was some kind of Aussie surf legend.
I even made it to Nazaré once.
The home of the biggest waves on Earth.
Naturally, the day I went it looked like someone had ironed the Atlantic.
It never worked.
Looking back, maybe the problem was that I didn’t have an Oporco Surf hoodie.
Featuring three surfboards inspired by Portugal—classic azulejos, colourful folk art and cork—plus our slightly suspicious Portuguese shark on the front.
Perfect for surfers, wannabe surfers, and anyone whose favourite part of going to the beach is chasing down the bloke selling bolas de Berlim.
